Data Science in Disasters and Emergency Response

Data Science in Disasters and Emergency Response is a short workshop-format introduction to using data science in emergency and disaster response that is written for first responders and emergency managers. The workshop was first given at the 2019 Indiana Emergency Response Conference and describes how the Tableau tool can be used for risk analysis from a NOAA storms database as well as to get useful information about emergency response using 911 call data. The workshop also introduces the concept of a Data-VOST, a way to get teams of often volunteer data scientsts working to support emergency response operations and logistics.
